Playing

  • Introduced to volleyball in 1983 when by chance I met a girl on the intramural soccer field @EWU. I didn't know it at the time, but she played on the volleyball team and later invited me to watch one of her games. That player turned out to be the Eagles starting setter, Sherrie (Vick) Brown. There was no turning back - I was hooked! I started shagging balls at all of Eastern's home games (the $5/game paid for pizza!) and from there I started playing with my soon-to-be wife on an intramural team in 1984 and in 1985 attended practices (playing alongside the girls team) at Ferris High School in Spokane where my wife coached with legendary high school coach Buzzy Welch, helping the Faxon's to a 7th place finish at the state high school tournament that year.
  • Starting in 1986 I began playing in various co-rec leagues and tournaments around the Seattle-Tacoma area, finally making the jump to USAV men's play in 1988.
