U16 Thunder

Team Thunder had a great tournament finishing 3rd overall in the U18 Division and only losing to the eventual champs and the runner up. The team was seeded 8th overall coming into the tournament and held seed after the first pool defeating Skagit 17's and NW Jrs 17. Going into the final match of Pool 1 the team felt they had a shot at taking a game off of VIP Jrs 18 Chad, but after a slow start they never regained their composure to put up a good fight and losing in two quick sets.
After a nice long break on Saturday, the team came back and played a more controlled match against a talented Narrows 18's team. From the service line, Team Thunder was able to string together a high percentage of aces and disrupting the opponent's offense.
With the time change on Saturday, Team Thunder was not quite ready for the high flyin' Ducks from Coquitlam (Canada) the eventual champs. They stunted our hitters with their big blockers and not to mention their big arm on the leftside. With the humbling experience, Thunder had regained their composure and played a flawless match and stunned the other Canadian team again from the service line (25-8, 25-16).
After squeaking by a "scrappy" NW Jrs. 15's team in the third set 16-14 from behind, Team Thunder had a second chance at VIP Jrs. in the semi-final match. This time with a different line-up VIP had their hands full. With a combination of Rae Ann, Brooke & Shelagh on the outside and Annemarie in the middle, they played an outstanding match against VIP Jrs. whom eventually took the match (23-25, 20-25).
Great work Ladies!

U15 Typhoon

Typhoon had a successful Spring Classic playing in the 18's Division at Spring Classic.
The first pool on Saturday was a learning period as Typhoon adjusted to the speed and style of the 18's game. After dropping 3 matches (BCO Elite, Oasis 17's, and Spokane Velocity), Typhoon found their stride, defeating the hard-hitting Athena 18 Beta 25-9 and 27-26.
On the second day, Typhoon maintained the momentum gained in that match losing a hard-fought match to Island Fire 17's, and defeating Skagit 17's to finish 2nd in pool DD. In the first round of the play-offs Typhoon was able to control the match throughout against Southend 17's and won comfortably. That was followed by a hard-fought rematch against a scrappy Skagit 17's team. Typhoon was able to prevail in 3 games.
The Silver division finals brought a rematch with Island Fire. Although Island Fire was able to outlast Typhoon, 22-25 and 23-25, Typhoon continued their high-level of play.
Chloe Sliger had an excellent tournament distributing the ball, as well as consistently putting pressure on teams with her serving. Christina Street and Marchelle Bostic both had excellent tournaments hitting outside, and Gabby Bird-Vogel had a number of impressive blocks and kills.

U14 Hurricane

Playing in the 16's division, Hurricane used the opportunity to work on specific elements of its game as it looked forward to PNQ in Spokane. Coming in as the #28 seed overall (last) - Hurricane had nowhere to go but up. In its first pool, Hurricane upset the pools #2 seed, Athena 16's, and got the much needed confidence boost it needed. In its second match, Hurricane played Edmonds 16 Elite (the #6 overall seed in the PSR Region 16's power league) and played well beyond their years.
Hurricane would lose one of its MH's to an ankle injury in set #2 but found a way to pull it out with help from an OH who filled in admirablly in the middle and with strong contributions from its outside hitters. In set #3, Hurricane battled but eventually fell, 10-15. In a must win match to move to the top half of the tournamnet, Hurricane rebounded with a 3 set win against Webfoot 15 Silver to take 2nd place in pool A.
In its second pool, Hurricane battled hard, but fell to Jammin 16's in two close sets, Edmonds 16 I ntensity and Webfoot 16 Silver. In the Silver bracket, Hurricane defeated Desert Scorpions, Webfoot 15 Silver (again) and in the bracket final lost to Webfoot 16 Silver (again) to finish 8th overall.
Great job Hurricane!

U13 Cyclone

After a tough Saturday morning, Cyclone came on strong fo the rest of the tournament and played exciting volleyball all the way to the last point of the Bronze finals.
Cyclone played hard in Saturday morning pool play, beginning with a very exciting first match loss against Gray's Harbor 14's. Set one was a loss 21:25. Set two was a thriller, where after being down as much as 1 to 11, Cyclone came back and won the set 27:25. The tie-breaker was a close loss 12:15. Next, Puyallup Jr's 14's played strong and defeated us in two, 16:25, 11:25. In the final match of the morning pool we picked it up again but still took a tough loss to the Coquitlam Ducks 14's, 19:25, 22:25. Finishing off Saturday, things changed dramatically starting with pool #2 and our first match against Cowlitz 14's. Cyclone began to pass better, to hustle on defense, and to hit with authority, taking the match 25:13 and 25:15 and pumping up the team to end the day.
On Sunday Cyclone only got stronger and for the rest of the day in both pool and match play we were clearly seen by the other teams in Bronze -- all of them 14's -- as "that 13's team that we don't want to have to play". We won our pool, defeating Skaget 14's, 25:13, 25:16, and then Rain City 14's, 25:21, 25:23.
Entering Bronze bracket play we were seeded #1 and started strong with a convincing win over G-Town 14's, 25:4, 25:15, and then another exciting win over Rain City 14's, 25:23, 12:25, 15:7, to advance to the finals against Port Angles 14's. The match went to back and forth to three sets, with PA just pulling it out, 25:17, 10:24, 13:15.
For the weekend Cyclone showed tremendous improvement that we can be very proud of, and of our strong finish. Sunday in particular, Cyclone really played great volleyball. The energy, effort, and teamwork were all visible throughout and it was a strong beginning to our final preperations for the Spokane Qualifier coming up later this month.

.::Power League #3::.

U18 Tsunami

Tsunami came out a little slow out of the gates in the morning, but their determination to redeem themselves after a disappointing Vegas showing came to a great culmination as they won the third installment of the Power League. The girls started the day with two wins against Narrows 18's and Island Thunder 18's. Next up was WVBA 18's and their first meeting of the season. Some tough plays from both sides showed both teams had great talents, however WVBA prevails in two sets for Tsunami's only loss for the day.
Next up is Puget Sound 18's in a 3 game thriller to the end. Big hitters and great defense lead the charge for both teams. Tsunami's middles Abby Trimble and Angie Pricco are too much for PS's defense and lead the way to victory to put Tsunami in the finals against WVBA 17's.
In the third meeting of these teams, Tsunami again comes out slowly dropping the first set in a close battle. Sweet defense from Savannah Feist, Katie Grajewski, Rianna Venn, and Jerrika Groeneweg keep Tsunami's offense in the game fighting tooth and nail with the tall WVBA team. Some great blocking on the outside and middle particularly from Hannah Harrison and setter, Kaitlyn Drew proved crucial to the win, especially in those last points. Hitters Taylor Davis, Lauren Barfield, and Savannah Feist contributed some impressive swings from the outside to carry the team to a 1st place finish in Power League #3.
Tournament Highlights: Lauren Barfield - 38 Kills; Savannah Feist - 38 Kills, 3 aces, 2.00 pass rating; Abby Trimble - 14 Kills; Angie Pricco - 16 Kills, 11 aces; Hannah Harrison - 16 Kills; Taylor Davis - 7 Kills; Kaitlyn Drew - 5 aces. Katie Grajewski - 5 aces, 2.14 pass rating, Rianna Venn - 2.15 pass rating. Tsunami hit .290 as a team and had a pass rating of 2.07.
Congrats Tsunami!!

U14 Hurricane

Hurricane entered the third round of power lague play as the tournament favorite and played tentative the entire day. The team struggled in its first two matches against Puget Sound 14's and Olympia 13's, but was fortunate to prevail in both matches.
In a mtach that would decide 1st place in pool A, Hurricane lost its first match of the season to WVBA 14 Black in 3 sets after being within 3 points of closing out the match in the 2nd set. Bracket play was no different as Olympia 14's pushed us to the brink before we survived 18-16 in the 3rd set. In the Gold final we faced off against WVBA 14's again, and lost in 2 sets to finish 2nd overall.
Hurricane will enter PrimeTime as the overall #1 seed in the 14's division.

U13 Cyclone

In Power League #3 Cyclone showed strong improvement in serving and in transition. Our first match was against a tough ACES 13's team that was seeded #1 in our pool and that had previously defeated us in a close Power League match. Cyclone came out strong and took the match in two sets, 25:23 and 25:18. From there the pool matches got even tougher. Cyclone stepped up to the challenge by defeating Saturday's Warriers 14 Shock in three sets on strong serving, including a long run of points from Anna Gorman serving, and with the winning point coming off of a huge cross-court kill by Megan Burkhardt. Then, in the final match of the pool Cyclone defeated Power Surge 13's in 3 sets, with Brooke Wiley serving a powerful ace for the final point. That win enabled Cyclone to win the pool.
In bracket play we had a drop in team energy and made a few too many mistakes. We were unable to keep up with a tough YMCA Blaze 14's team, losing 19:25 and 15:25. In our last match we lost by a one-set score of 18:25 to the same Saturday's Warriers 14's team that we had defeated earlier.
We finish Power League in 28th place and will wait now for the overall results to see if we qualify for Primetime. Most importantly, Cyclone continues to improve, everyone is becoming a better volleyball player, and we had fun!

.::President's Day Classic::.

U16 Thunder

We finished the tournament tied for 5th and with no injuries (that was an accomplishment in it self).
Round 1 was uneventful finishing with a 3-0 record. Team Webfoot Silver put up a pretty good fight with extraordinary defense, but Team Thunder was relentless with some fast pace offense. The first 2 matches of round 2 was about the same as day 1. Then came the final match of the day, Webfoot 16 Gold vs. SIVBC 16 Thunder. Both teams were countering each others moves and both teams were "outside" dominant, but in the end it's who willing to swing for the match. It was a match well played. The last match of the tournament was just as exciting. We picked up right where we left off from Sunday afternoon. We were matched up with our local rivals WVBA 16-Black. We took the first game with tough serves winning it with ease and the countered with some high-flying defense and quick offense, but we fought hard and still came up short by 3-points in the second game. The third game went the distance with both teams fighting to hang on to every serve. It was a valiant effort.
Nice job Thunder!

U15 Typhoon

U14 Hurricane

Hurricane played up in the 15's division in hope of pushing its game to a higher level. Looking for tough matches, Hurricane found just that in facing NW Juniors 15 Thunder, Sideout 15's (Spokane) and Edmonds 15's on day one. The speed of the game was too much to overcome against its first two opponents, although at times Hurrciane competed well after adjusting.
Just needing to win one match to get to the top half of the tournament, Hurricane came close, but couldn't sustain through all 3 games against Edmonds and lost 13-15 to move to the Bronze Division.
On day 2, with much more confidence, Hurricane defeated VIP Jrs 15's (Spokane), Island Thunder 15 Under Armour, and Spokane Sky 15's (Spokane) to win its pool.
On Monday, we defeated NW Juniors 15 Lightning before losing in two close sets (23-25, and 24-26) agisnt VIP Jrs to close out the tournament. Good lessons learned as we continue to improve and look ahead to the qualifier season.

U18 Tsunami

Tsunami started out with a tough pool on Day 1 with a solid Gold Bear 18-1 team and Premier from Dallas. The girls bounced back however winning against MD Juniors to finish 3rd in the pool. Day 2 proved to be a day of redemption as Tsunami played almost flawlessly to finish 1st in their pool beating Zona 18's, Gainesville 18's, and Sunstorm 18's. Tsunami really went after it with great support from the backrow and some spectacular hitting from all the hitters. Day 3 started slow against Central Cal 18 Gold, but Tsunami couldn't hold on and lost the match in 2. Tsunami finishes tied for 73rd.
Tournament Highlights: Lauren Barfield - 38 Kills; Savannah Feist - 32 Kills, 4 aces, 2.03 pass rating; Abby Trimble - 21 Kills, 6 aces; Angie Pricco - 18 Kills, 8 aces; Hannah Harrison - 23 Kills; Taylor Davis - 24 Kills, 5 aces; Kendra Kisling - 5 aces; Kaitlyn Drew - 10 aces. .::Power League #2::.

U18 Tsunami

Tsunami capped off a hard working two weeks of practice with a great 3rd place finish at Power League #2. After a slow start, Tsunami dispatched Island Thunder 18's their first match of the day in 3 sets. Next up was the #1 seed WVBA 17's. Both teams fought hard with some big hits out of the middle and outside, but Tsunami's tough serving and sold passing and defense carried them to victory in two sets. The last match of the pool brought KJ 18's to the court. Both teams struggled to gain some momentum through the match, splitting the f irst two sets. Game 3 proved to be a battle with Tsunami down 4, 4-8 in the third. But the ladies gained their composure and fought back to win 16-14.
The first round of bracket play put Tsunami against Puget Sound 18's and their height and power. Off to another slow start, Tsunami had trouble getting into a groove after a bit of a break. Some tough servers from Puget Sound proved to be too much for them and Tsunami lost in two sets. WVBA 17's lost to their 18's team, so the battle for 3rd and 4th put WVBA and Sudden Impact back on the court again.
In the one game to 25 seeding match, Tsunami came out roaring with some great play from OH Taylor Davis and L Katie Grajewski. Tsunami wins the match moves from 10th to 3rd overall for Power League #2.
Tournament Highlights: Lauren Barfield - 21 Kills; Savannah Feist - 22 Kills, 3 aces; Abby Trimble - 11 Kills; Angie Pricco - 19 Kills, 4 aces; Hannah Harrison - 5 Kills; Taylor Davis - 17 Kills, 5 aces; Kendra Kisling - 4 aces; Kaitlyn Drew - 3 aces.

Storm settled down for the second match against Northshore 17 quickly dispatching them in 2 sets hitting .273 with just 5 hitting errors as a team in the match. In the last match of the pool against WVBA 18 Red, Storm started off a little slow and dropped the first set but battled back to take the next 2 sets to pull it out in 3 where Mackenzie Peerboom hit .714 with no errors in the match.

Hurricane Wins Power League Gold - Again!

Coming in as the #1 overall seed after winning January's power league, Hurricane would have its work cut out to retain its top seed. Starting off slowly in pool play, Hurricane put away PowerSurge 13's in two sets, and then took care of Cascade 13's in two sets. Hurricane then matched up against WVBA 14 Red in its final match of pool play to determine the #1 seed in Pool A. The match started slowly for Hurricane and the highly motivated Academy team raced to an early lead with some tough serving. After a time out to settle their nerves, Hurricane methodically clawed its way back into the match and would eventually win in two sets.
In the final match of Pool B, PowerSurge 14's upset WVBA 14 Black, setting up a much anticipated re-match of last months Sudden Impact vs WVBA final, but this time in the semi-finals. Both teams came out slugging in this one, with Hurricane winning a close set #1, 25-23. In set #2, a relentless attack and tough serving lead to a 25-14 Hurricane win. In the other semi-final, PowrSurge 14's could not sustain thier level of play and fell to WVBA 14 Red in 3 close sets.
In the Gold Division final, Hurricane easily dispatched WVBA Red 25-10, 25-11 to claim their second power league championship of the season.
All 12 players contributed during the day as they finished with a 5-0 (10-0 set) record. Great job Hurricane!
Next up...the President's Day Classic where Hurricane will "play up" in the 15's division and square off against several of the regions top 15's teams as they prepare for power league #3 in March.

U13 Cyclone

Cyclone entered the morning's pool play as 1st seed in Copper and the first match was an exciting 3-set win over 3rd seed Above The Net 13's, 25-9, 24-26, and 15-1. Cyclone stuggled passing in the next two matches, however, and lost to Saturday's Warriers 14's, 15-25 and 23-25, and NW Jr's 14's, 22-25 and 17-25, to finish 3rd in the pool.
In afternoon bracket play Cyclone defeated Olympia 13's #2 in 2 sets, 25-16 and 25-19 to earn the right to play in the 5th / 6th place match. Matched up against Bellevue Blaze 14's, Cyclone came up against some tough serves and lost in 2 sets, 7-25 and 19-25, to finish in 6th place in Copper.
We saw improvement in our play when compared to Power League #1, with our serving improving to 86.9%, and our points-given-away (serve and passing errors) dropping from 6.8 / game down to 5.4 / game. We'll be working hard in practice to continue those trends, and to raise our passing performance.

U12 Monsoon

Monsoon made significant improvements in the second round of U-12 power league. The girls faced tough competition early in the day in Gold Division pool play. Monsoon struggled early on, losing first to a very quick UPVBC team, and against a very strong serving Narrows Black team. The team showed great resilience in the next match, against ITVC UA (Thunder Monkeys). Monsoon won the first set 25-18 with consistent serving and excellent free ball passing. The second set was back and forth, and Monsoon ended up losing by one point, 26-27. In the deciding set Monsoon served well but struggled with passing and ended up losing 8-15.
In the playoffs, Monsoon lost to Olympia in two, 20-25 and 15-25. In the last match of the day (one set to 25) Monsoon faced Cascade, a team they lost to in the final consolation match two weeks ago. The girls came out strong with excellent serving and quickly ga ined momentum, eventually winning 25-18.
The team saw great improvements in their serving, averaging 67% for the day, up from 52% two weeks ago. Monsoon moved up in the power league rankings, from 8th to 7th. Next round they will be in the Silver Division, where we expect to see continued improvement in their serving and passing.
Tournament Highlights:Sloane Morrison - 90% serving, 10 aces, 1.50 passing avg.; Heidi Schimpf - 18 aces, 1.35 passing avg.; Kristin Mikolajewski - 100% serving, .400 hitting efficiency, 3 kills; Savannah Schultz - 78% serving; Abbi Bailey - 7 aces.

Tournament Highlights: Lauren Barfield - 46 Kills, 5 aces; Savannah Feist - 35 Kills, 5 aces; Abby Trimble - 16 Kills; Angie Pricco - 22 Kills; Hannah Harrison - 25 Kills; Taylor Davis - 22 Kills; Kendra Kisling - 8 aces; Kaitlyn Drew - 7 aces; Rianna Venn - 7 aces. Tsunami hit a .280 for the tournament!

U17 Storm

The first day consisted of 2 matches. The first match of the tournament saw Storm charge to a 3 set sweep over Puget Sound 17 Gold. The second match of the day against NW Jrs 18 Storm ended with the same result - a 3 set sweep.
Day 2 started off against Oasis17 out of Abbotsford. BC. After taking the first 2 sets, Oasis was able to squeeze out the last set 26-27 ending the set after hitting the 27 point cap. The next match against the Coquitlam Ducks 18's proved to be the toughest match of the weekend. The Ducks took all three sets. The last match of the tournament match up against Above the Net 18's saw Storm win the match 2 sets to 1.
Overall, Storm finished 5th overall with a match record of 4-1 and a set record of 10-5. Tournament Highlights: Laura Friar - .300 hitting efficiency; Emily Halvorson - 94.4% serve percentage; Kayla Schwisow - 5 digs per game average.

U16 Thunder

Thunder started off the weekend with a convincing first set win over Power Surge 16 (25-15) and dropped the next two sets to them 17-25 & 21-25, but I guess that's what happens when you try different players in different positions. The next match versus Puget Sound 15 Gold was the most exciting & challenging match of the weekend for us. It started with a prediction from their coach saying "I predict this match will go the distance" and he was right. Puget Sound came out with something to prove. Both teams picked up from where they left off from the previous weekend at PSR Power League where they lost to SIVB 1-2 and the first went to them 22-25. Then in the second set, Thunder reciprocated with a 25-22. Both teams battled to the end of the third set with Puget Sound finishing it 25-18.
With all the excitement out of the way, the team was just focusing on improving their skills and getting things in place. They used the rest of the tournament to do just that. By the end of the tournament, their quick-hitters were starting to connect a little better with the setters.
Thunder finished the tournament with a 3-2 match record and 11-4 set record.
Good work Team Thunder!

After working through some rotation issues and getting all 12 players time on the court, the team settled down and by the end of the day held their #1 overall seed and won the Gold Divison bracket. The coaches were pleased to see that the team showed poise when things weren't going their way and look forward to practice this week as they prepare for round one of the power league this coming weekend.
Great job Hurricane!

.::Power League #1::.

U18 Tsunami

Day 1 - Tsunami started off slow, but gradually ironed out the wrinkles as the day went on. We handily took first in the morning pool with some solid play from everyone. The afternoon proved to be a little bit more challenging after a long break. Tsunami won their first match easily but came up against North Central Washington 17's, a strong opponent from Wenatchee. Unfortunately, Tsunami lost 1-2 and headed to the Silver division for Day 2. Day 2 - Tsunami began the day with winning their pool again not dropping a set to their opponents. This set them up to play for the Silver division championship to move up to Gold. Their first opponents in bracket play were Rain City Lokahi 17's. After a tough battle and scrappy defense played by both sides, Tsunami squeezed by in 2 sets with solid hitting on the outside and right side. Up next for Tsunami to play for 9th and 10th was South Sound Ohana 18's. Tsunami fought hard taking the match to 3 sets, but couldn't hang on at the end, so Tsunami finishes 10th to move up to Gold for February's Power League.
Tournament highlights: Lauren Barfield - 36 Kills; Savannah Feist - 29 Kills, 6 aces; Abby Trimble - 11 Kills; Angie Pricco - 12 Kills; Hannah Harrison - 13 Kills; Taylor Davis - 16 Kills; Kendra Kisling - 6 aces; Kaitlyn Drew - 9 aces; Liberos Katie Grajewski, Rianna Venn, and Jerrika Groeneweg, along with Savannah Feist combined to pass a 2.13 for the day. Tsunami hit an impressive .230 for the tournament as well!
Great Start Tsunami!

U17 Storm

U16 Thunder

Day 1 - It was "rusty". Thunder had a little bit of trouble serving & transitioning, but had it all worked out by our second match and then cruised through the rest of the 1st pool not giving any sets. In the afternoon pool, they were matched up against a talented WVBA U15 team. They came out strong against our defense, but Thunder's offense overwhelmed them in the end. We ended the day 5-0 and held seed as the number 2 team going into Sunday.
Day 2 - Sunday morning Thunder faced PSVBC-U15 Gold with lots of talent and they fought well, but could not sustain the pace of the game and gave up an 8 point lead in the second game. They then beat Edmonds Elite 16-1 for the second time in the tournament. Thunder dropped the first match of the tournament to WVBA U16 followed by a lost to a physical UPVBC U16 the eventual champions. We finished an impressive 4th overall for the weekend.
Stats - Thunder hit an impressive .240 for the tournament and served 92% in bounds hitting our targets most of the time.
Nice work Thunder!

U15 Typhoon

U14 Hurricane

Day 1 - Coming in as the #2 overall seed in the 14's division, Hurricane began play at Highline CC on Saturday by winning its first two matches against NW Jrs 13 Thunder and Island Thunder 14 Under Armour before moving to Washington HS for its second pool on Saturday afternoon. Using contributions from all 12 players throughout the day, Hurricane put away its next three opponents (Wahine 14 Black, All out 14's, and Olympia 13-1) to secure a spot in the gold division on Sunday.
Day 2 - Entering Sunday's pool play, Hurricane started off slowly by dispatching a tough Power Surge 13's team in 3 sets before suffering its first defeat of the season against a scrappy Cascade 14 Blue team who caught us with our guard down. In its last match of pool play Hurricane needed a win against Power Surge 14's to secure a spot in the winners bracket semi-final and did so with a convincing 2 set sweep to win pool B and set up a semi-final match-up against WVBA 14 Red. Behind tough serving and consistent defense, Hurricane prevailed in two, 25-17, 25-16.
In the other semi-final, WVBA 14 Black dispatched Power Surge 14's to set up a much anticipated #1 VS #2 match-up in the gold bracket final. Each team had significant scoring runs, and after some great play on both sides of the net, the match was all even at one set a piece. In the deciding 15 point 3rd set, nerves began to play a part as Hurricane missed 4 serves to give the opponent the early lead. Hurricane battled back and displayed great poise down the stretch by scoring the last 4 points and closed out the match 16-14 on a convincing Maddie Magee kill from the middle to secure the win. The final match featured two quality teams who will undoubtedly face each other again as the season progresses.
Great job Hurricane! View team picture!

U13 Cyclone

U12 Monsoon

Monsoon made a strong showing early in the day, placing 2nd in their pool. After a very long extended break Monsoon faced tougher competition in the championship bracket. First up was a solid Narrows PS team. Monsoon struggled against their strong serving and lost in two. They then faced KJ and Cascade, also two teams who proved to be more consistent from the end line. Monsoon was the only team in the championship bracket that did not return at least one player from the previous season, but did a great job hanging in there and competing against more experienced teams. All of the girls showed significant improvement as the day went on, and every player made at least one spectacular play. Monsoon finished the day in 8th place, and the girls look forward to Power League #2 on Feb. 3, where they hope to show improvement in their serving and passing, and move up in the rankings. Great job, girls!
