U15 Typhoon - Power League 1
Result - 10th
The first pool of the morning for Power League 1 saw Typhoon match up against NW Jr 15 Thunder and South End Juniors 15 Gene. Typhoon had no issue with either team in the short sets to 15 to finish the pool 2-0. The afternoon pool was tougher than the morning with solid play from all four teams. Typhoon went 2-1 to finish second in the pool losing to a solid Puyallup Juniors team and defeating Cascade 15 Blue and YMCA Blaze 15. The loose to Puyallup Juniors put Typhoon in Fight #2 for Sunday.
The first match of Sunday saw Typhoon come out strong making quick work of Jammin’ 15. The second match up against OPVBC 15 Force was a quick one as well dispatching OPVBC in 2 sets. The last match in pool was against Olympia Volleyball Club. OVC took the match putting Typhoon in second place in the pool. The good news is that Storm was in a position to move up to Flight #1 with a win in the crossover match.
The crossover match was against the 14’s team from Olympia Volleyball Club. OVC 14’s turned out to be a scrappy team that showed up to play taking the first set 26-24. Set two was a completely different story. Typhoon came out strong and never let up. Keeping the pressure on OVC 14, Typhoon cruised to a 25-15 win. The third set was a back and forth affair with Typhoon edging out OVC 15-13 to set up a rematch with OVC 15.
Typhoon finished 10th overall in the first Power League weekend. The 10th place finish moves Typhoon into Flight #1 for the next Power League on Feb 21. All in all, it was a great weekend of volleyball with a W/L record of 7-3.
U15 Typhoon - NW Juniors MLK Invitational
Result - 4th in U16
MLK was a great tournament for Typhoon even with day one being so long that it seemed like it would never end and then nonstop play of nine straight sets on day two. Seeded ninth overall, Typhoon started pool play with a 25-3, 20-25, 25-18 win over Ridge Valley 16’s and kept the momentum with a strong 25-16, 18-25, 25-13 win against Lake Tapps 16’s.
Improved over last week’s tournament in both passing and serving, with more focus and reduced errors, Typhoon finished first in the first round of pool play. Day two started strong with a win in the second round pool against KJ 15’s 25-22, 23-25, 25-17. Again, strong passing and serving, coupled with high-energy defense made the difference.
In the second and final match of pool play, Typhoon had a fun match against our own SIVBC 16’s team. The 16’s served well and that – along with a bit of nervousness – had Typhoon playing a bit tentative, going 13-25 in both the first and second set. In the third set, Typhoon came on strong, taking an early lead, and the battle was on! Both teams played with energy and fire, with several lead changes over the course of the set. Typhoon pushed the 16’s to overtime and in the end, the 16’s pulled out a 25-27 win. It was a great match, with the 16’s going on to play in the 1st/2nd place match, and Typhoon playing for 3rd/4th.
Typhoon had played six straight sets to 25 and had only a 20 minute break before starting the playoff match against UPVBC 15’s. Typhoon battled in set one to take it 27-25. Playing in the third match in a row, Typhoon started to run out of gas and dropped the second and third sets 13-25 and 6-15. Typhoon finished in fourth place overall (out of 18 teams), above all other 15’s teams except UPVBC. Overall, lots of improvement and energy on the court, and lots of fun!
